Eco Club: What We’ve Been Up To This Year

Our Eco Club is made up of a small but enthusiastic group of children from Year 1 to Year 6. The older pupils take great pride in supporting and encouraging the younger members, creating a lovely sense of teamwork and shared purpose.

Caring for Our Grounds

Throughout the year, the children take part in a variety of environmental and sustainability projects around the school and in the village. Recently, they prepared our flower and vegetable beds for spring by clearing weeds and planting daffodil, tulip, and allium bulbs—which are now beginning to peek through the soil.

Sustainable Christmas Creations

In the lead‑up to Christmas, Eco Club focused on creative ways to reduce waste. They transformed old Christmas cards into gift tags, crafted compostable decorations, and made mini wreaths and table arrangements using locally foraged greenery. These beautiful creations brought festive cheer while promoting sustainability.

Book & Toy Swap Initiative

Most recently, the children designed eye‑catching posters to promote our upcoming Book and Toy Swap on 10 February. This event is a fantastic way to share resources and give pre‑loved books and toys a new lease of life.

What’s Next?

Over the coming months, Eco Club will be sowing fruit and vegetables in their garden patch. They also plan to continue caring for the benches around school, ensuring they remain welcoming spaces for everyone.

Apple‑Pressing and Charity Fundraising

In October, we rented an apple press from Sustainable Wantage. The children collected, chopped, crushed and pressed hundreds of locally grown and foraged apples, including those picked at Hendred House.
They sold the delicious fresh juice at our Harvest Market and proudly donated the proceeds—an amazing Â£164—to CAFOD.
